Free Breast Screening
Did you know that...
- Free breast screening for women aged 45 to 69 years is provided by the national breast screening programme, BreastScreen Aotearoa.
- The aim of breast screening is to find very small cancers before a lump can be found on the breast. Early treatment has the best chance of success.
- Breast cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand women.
- The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. Breast cancer is uncommon in women under 50.
- For older women, breast screening using mammography (breast x-rays) followed by appropriate treatment is the best way of reducing the chance of dying from breast cancer.
If you live in Otago and Southland your Lead Provider is BreastScreen HealthCare Ph: 0800 270 200. HealthCare Otago Ltd, Dunedin Hospital, Ground Floor, Corner Frederick and Cumberland Streets, Dunedin
Mammography Screening Units - Dunedin Hospital and Southland Hospital.
Assessment centres - Assessment of women following an abnormal mammogram will be carried out at Dunedin Hospital and Southland Hospital.
Making an appointment - If are you are 45 to 69 years old and have been screened with BreastScreen Aotearoa before, you will get a letter inviting you for another mammogram with the programme. You can also make an appointment for yourself by ringing 0800 270 200. You should also ring this number if you have changed your address since your last mammogram.
All other women aged 45 to 69 who do not have breast symptoms can register for the programme by ringing 0800 270 200, or you register for the programme on-line.
Click here to register for BreastScreen Aotearoa.
Having a mammogram if you are disabled
Women are usually asked when making an appointment if they have any special needs due to a disability. If you are not asked, tell the person making the appointment about your needs. This enables the service to plan for the visit, including allowing more time.
Although mobile units have a wheelchair hoist, women with physical disabilities are encouraged to attend a clinic as clinics are better able to provide access, allow more time and accommodate carers.
