Free Prescriptions

This service is for patients who cannot afford their prescription costs and whose health, or their child’s health, will suffer as a result of not taking their medication.

The subsidy is only available for medications needed unexpectedly and soon, i.e. for acute need, not for regular prescriptions to treat chronic (long duration) illnesses or diseases.

If your Doctor thinks that you qualify for a free emergency prescription they will stamp and sign the prescription, which tells the participating pharmacist that the prescription charge will be paid by Well Dunedin.

The prescription must be taken to the pharmacist within 7 days of seeing the doctor or it is no longer valid. Most of the pharmacies in the Well Dunedin area are participating in this programme, though not all. You can check with your practitioner whether your local pharmacy is involved.

Why is it needed?

Patients without community services cards, who are close to the threshold for getting one, can incur unaffordable costs for health care. Some patients attend consultations at General Practices but cannot afford to pay for the prescriptions that follow. This subsidy will help to reduce further health costs and complications from illnesses left untreated due to financial difficulties.
