Well Dunedin

We work hard to provide a first class health service for you and your family by supporting our 17 general practices and our 61 General Practitioners, 43 Practice Nurses, and other health professionals. Collectively we provide or support:

  • care and treatment when people are ill
  • services that help people to stay healthy
  • working with and understanding those groups in our community who have poor health or who are missing out on primary health care
  • maintaining links between primary care health providers in our community
  • managing the new health initiatives and health funding on behalf of the Otago District Health Board, and Ministry of Health.

As a PHO, Well Dunedin gets a set amount of funding from the government to subsidise a range of health services over and above standard GP care. The funding is based on the numbers and characteristics (eg, age, sex, ethnicity) of people enrolled with us.

A Board of eight appointed trustees governs Well Dunedin. The Board’s composition reflects the Government’s objective for PHOs to have input from the community, iwi, and health service providers. Management and administrative support is provided to Well Dunedin by Health Management Services.

Our funded initiatives include :

  • Subsidising doctors fees and pharmaceutical charges

  • Health promotion programmes

  • Services to improve access to health care for high-needs groups.

Well Dunedin works towards finding ways to give people direct access to a broad multidisciplinary primary health care team.
